A tragic train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel opposition criticisms regarding the pace and management of the country's major government projects.
The disaster happened on the Interoceanic Train, a route developed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.
“We shall thoroughly investigate what caused this accident,” stated the head of state.
The president confirmed that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The official added plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those affected.
Flagship Project of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a central public works project of the previous administration, whose term finished the previous year. This project was closely associated with his administration's developmental goals for the southeastern region.
Another ambitious train initiative from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economy of a relatively less developed part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns
The construction of both rail lines was managed by the army, marking a significant increase of its role in civilian infrastructure. They were executed at an fast-tracked speed, surpassing predictions to be at least partly launched before the end of that presidency.
However, this rushed timetable had also sparked significant apprehensions over operational security.
- Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This involves an earlier accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had several non-fatal derailments.
Calls for Audit and Pause
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the chief of a key rival party demanded an prompt halt in the building and running of all such projects.
This pause was requested while awaiting a thorough independent investigation. The party stated that the loss of life "requires prompt explanations."
In response, the national leader maintained that the train had been operating in full compliance with all operational standards. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the development and operation of these vital projects.
