Jair Bolsonaro has been taken into custody after authorities concluded he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under house arrest.

The former head of state was convicted of plotting a military coup in last fall and sentenced more than 27 years in prison, but he was staying under house arrest pending appeals.

Top Judicial Official Justice Moraes said the move to detain the 70-year-old politician was a preventative measure after recent developments came to light.

This included trying to remove his electronic bracelet and a invitation to a public vigil that could facilitate a chance to flee".

In a document approving the detention, Justice Moraes said intelligence from the unit overseeing Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the ex-president's "intention to break the electronic ankle bracelet to secure accomplishment in his getaway".
