In a first day in his new role, Zohran Mamdani vowed to “transform” New York City, declaring “a fresh chapter” and an audacious start to his administration.

An Unprecedented Mayor

The young figure, who was a virtually unknown state assemblyman, has become the city's first mayor born in Africa. He also made history by being the first to be sworn in using the Islamic holy text.

“A time such as this comes rarely and rarer still is it that the people themselves whose hold the mechanisms of progress,” Mamdani remarked.

Ignoring suggestions to be modest, the mayor was emphatic: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to change is that of limited ambitions. Beginning today we will lead boldly and broadly.”

Steering by Socialist Convictions

Mamdani did not shy away from his core beliefs. “I was elected as a socialist leader and I will lead as one. I will not forsake my convictions for concern of being called extreme,” he proclaimed to rapturous applause.

The inauguration was a dual event, beginning with a late-night oath-taking in a disused subway station. He was officially inaugurated on the front steps of city hall by Vermont independent senator Bernie Sanders, who praised Mamdani's ascent as a victory over powerful interests.

A Costly Policy Agenda

Mamdani now undertakes one of the most challenging jobs in American politics, with a platform featuring:

• Free childcare
• No-cost bus transit
• A cap on rents for approximately 1 million households
• A experiment of municipally-operated grocery stores

The projected $10 billion cost of these services may prove difficult to secure. Mamdani has vowed to tax more heavily the city's top earners and corporations. However, as a city subject to the state government, he will require the cooperation of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Managing External Headwinds

The new mayor also faces skepticism from some Jewish New Yorkers concerned about his past criticisms regarding Israel. Tensions were revealed during the transition when a senior aide resigned over controversial past social media posts.

Mamdani has moved to smooth over these concerns by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, avoiding the optics of losing a Jewish police chief.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “communist” and threatened withholding federal funding. Despite this, a prior meeting between the two was described as surprisingly productive.

The Fundamental Challenges of Governing

Traditionally, New York mayors are evaluated by their ability in delivering essential functions: trash collection, reducing the rat infestation, fixing potholes, and ensuring smooth subway operation.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his team's public safety record, citing record low numbers of homicides and gun violence in 2025, with murders reported.

As his term starts, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Astoria apartment to the stately mayoral residence. The previous occupant offered a quirky warning about a supposed friendly ghost in the home, which reportedly only troubles those who fail to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani concluded his remarks with a direct declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
